Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - More resources are being poured into improving hospital services with Klerksdorp Hospital/Tshepong’s latest acquisition of a brand new brachy therapy unit.
This piece of equipment costs a total of R15 million. It was commissioned at the hospital’s Oncology Unit. This unit is state of the art and the first of its kind in South Africa.
While expounding on what this new technology has to offer to the patients and the citizens of the province, the CEO, Thulane Madonsela, said: “The advantage of this unit is that the entire treatment process of scanning, treatment planning and application of radiation treatment can be done in one room without moving around the patient for the different aspects of treatment.
“This unit can be used to give radiation treatment for cancer of the prostate, cervix and oesophagus.”
Training of the medical personnel took place on March 19 and the first patient was treated the next day (March 20).
A huge difference in service offering is that the full cancer treatment of North West is now available at the Klerksdorp/Tshepong Hospital complex.
CEO Madonsela attributes this latest success to the collective team of the hospital and the support received at provincial level.
“I’m grateful to the executive management for the support led by the Superintendent General, the DDG for Hospitals and Clinical Support Services, the Acting CFO, the National Tertiary Services Grant (NTSG), the oncology team from the national Department of Health and most of all Prof Binu Luke and the entire Klerksdorp/ Tshepong Hospital team for making this dream successful. Fewer and fewer patients will be referred to Gauteng hospitals,” concluded Madonsela.
