Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - The municipality started demolishing empty buildings in the city last week. At the time of going to press, they were busy demolishing a dilapidated building in Alabama.

The Department of Planning and Human Settlements initiated this project of demolishing abandoned and dilapidated buildings in Matlosana.

Ntswaki Makgetha, municipal spokesperson, said Cllr Portia Mtshawulana is the driving force behind the initiative.

Residents in Elandia are happy about the demolition of a dilapidated building located at 22 Couzyn Street in Elandia. It is not known if the house was standing empty or whether residents moved into it illegally.

“This action follows numerous complaints from residents regarding the neglected buildings, which have become havens for illegal activities, including drug use, posing significant risks to people’s safety. Through the demolition of these buildings, the department aims to eradicate these hazards and prevent further harm,” the Cllr said.
