Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - Cultural heritage is that which defines a nation, that which makes people proud, that which defines their values in a world and the significance of that which has happened yesterday pales against the background of the instant gratification offered by the glamour of social media and even mainstream media.
A diverse group of concerned residents gathered at the Klerksdorp Museum recently with the aim to protect and promote Klerksdorp’s heritage. The founders meeting of a new cultural organization known as Heritage Matlosana was hosted at the Klerksdorp Museum on August 17. A steering committee was elected to office with the stated goal of establishing and promoting Heritage Matlosana as a NPO tasked with assisting especially local as well as other levels of Government with promoting and preserving the city’s proud cultural heritage as envisioned by the National Heritage Resources Act.
“Through years of inaction and neglect, places of cultural historical significance to South Africans have fallen largely into disrepair or even ruin. One such example is Goudkoppie Heritage Hill at the eastern entrance to Klerksdorp, next to the N12. Once a proud Provincial Heritage Site offering a glimpse into all the pioneering cultures of our city (the Khoisan, Tswana and Voortrekkers) and also Anglo Boer War and early gold mining history, this now dilapidated site has deteriorated to such an extent that its provincial heritage status is no longer justified,” said the chairperson, Pieter du Preez.
