Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - Up until Saturday December 7, a total of 1420 illegal miners resurfaced at various abandoned mine shafts and Margaret mine shaft in Stilfontein. Eight bodies in total were recovered at Buffelsfontein nr 11 Shaft.
According to Col Adele Myburgh, police spokesperson, of the six zama-zamas that resurfaced over the weekend, all are Mozambican.
Efforts to get the illegal miners back to the surface have faced setbacks as the miners continue to make additional demands. The operation to get them out of the shaft, has been ongoing for nearly a month.
While NGOs were granted a court order to provide humanitarian aid, such as food, water, and medical supplies, the zama-zamas have requested non-essential items, including candles, snuff, and sorghum beer for a ritual. They have also requested mayonnaise, washing powder, tomato sauce, beef, Koo canned beans, soap and deodorants.
