Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - It’s been a wet New Year thus far.
This week’s heavy downpours in the Kosh Area have flooded roads and opened up potholes making driving in these circumstances very difficult.
In Wilkoppies, Oupa Coetzee measured more than 60mm from 05:00 on Tuesday January 9 until after 09:00 on Wednesday January 10. His rain-gauge measured about 70mm since New Year’s day before this week’s downpour began.
On Wednesday morning Catrien Pieterse measured 66mm and Rehana de Buisson measured 60mm in Songloed. In Orkney it is said that more than 90mm rain fell in 24 hours.
The SA Weather Service warned of severe thunderstorms over the southern parts of North West.
These storms are expected to produce heavy downpours, strong winds, hail and excessive lightning that may result in flooding of roads, settlements and low-lying areas resulting in closure of some bridges and roads, danger to life (fast flowing streams/deep water) danger to informal/ formal houses or structures over populated areas (urban or rural villages), and structural damages (homes, car port, etc).
On Friday January 5 heavy winds accompanied by hail caused some damage to property in Klerksdorp. Households in Jouberton, Freemanville, Meiringspark, Songloed, Declerqville, Elandsheuwel, Irenepark and Wilkoppies were left without power for hours after the severe storm.
The Civic Centre in Stilfontein experienced some serious damage caused by a storm on December 26. The roofing at the west wing of the building was mostly affected. Three families were relocated to alternative accommodation.
The owner of the building has appointed a service provider to repair the damage caused by the rainstorm.
