Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - Two Gr 10 learners from Milner High School won the provincial award of the SA Youth Water Prize.
Stacey Dunjana and Makhadzi Masilela, both 15 years old, will now go on to the national competition of the annual South African Youth Water Prize. The overall winners will represent their school and the country at 2025 Stockholm Junior Water Prize in Sweden.
They were announced as NW winners by the Department of Water and Sanitation on May 6 and 7. Twelve schools from the province participated in the competitions showcasing their awareness campaigns and the inventions to address water and sanitation related issues.
The two learners represented Matlosana in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality when they presented an awareness campaign on “The utilization of recycled water to address domestic water waste in South Africa”.
The learners each won full bursaries to further their studies in water sector related courses, a cash prize of R11 000 of which half will go to the school and the remaining half will be spend on their school needs.
Two learners from Pinagare High School in Taung, Oratile Diphatse and Tshegofatso Edward were declared the second-place winners. The third place was taken by Mosiane Warona and Boitumelo Plaatjie from ZM Seatlholo Secondary School in Mafikeng Local Municipality.
Speaking at the closure of the adjudications, one of the adjudicators, Lerato Mabotja, a scientist from Department of Water and Sanitation, commended all learners for their innovations and meticulous presentations which will help the department to deal with water conservation, water supply challenges and sanitation related issues.
