Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - The Klerksdorp School of Gymnastics (KSG) staged their showcase last week and people are already looking forward to the next one - even though they have to wait until 2026!
This production is only held every two years, but it is worth the wait.
KSG staged the show over three nights (November 28-30) and it wasn’t just a gymnastics show. It was a world class production with costumes, lighting and choreography. It was two hours of mind-boggling gymnastics and theatre.
According to the MC, Artyom Vizer, coach and also part of the show, the stars practised for five weeks and they had hundreds of costumes made for the event. More than a thousand people attended the three shows. “We do this show every two years. It’s too early to say what we are planning for the showcase in 2026, but we have plans to make the show even bigger,” he said.
KSG needs the support of Klerksdorp’s community in they want to continue to offer quality training to young gymnasts.
Vizer said the school is not in danger of closing, but costs to keep it open have skyrocketed. “Funds from the government and the NWU High Performance Institute have dried up. We need essential upgrades, including a new artistic gymnastics floor worth R1,5 million and a rhythmic gymnastics carpet worth R400 000,” he said.
Currently, KSG is a premier hub for gymnastics for the entire NW province as they host numerous club, district and provincial competitions.
The school has produced notable gymnasts such as Leigh-Ann Biggs (1991 World Championships), Zandre Labuschagne (2004 Athens Olympics), Sibongile Mjekula (2010 Commonwealth Games), Grace Legote (various World Championships and Commonwealth Games) and Lilica Burger (multiple SA champion).
Their recent achievements are 23 gold, 21 silver and 12 bronze medals at the 2024 Gym Games in Cape Town.
