Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - Klerksdorp has new world champions in our midst with two locals winning the modified class of the world inflatable powerboat championship that was held in Gqeberha.

Renier le Roux and co-pilot Jan Human ended first overall in their class after winning both the flat racing and surf racing legs, then ending runner-up in the long-haul endurance race of 120 kilometres.

They received their Protea colours at the start of the championship and could not be more proud to represent the country in this adrenaline filled sport.

The event boasted competitors from Holland, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Namibia, and South Africa.

Two more teams from Klerksdorp’s Formula 1 Inflatable Boat Club, Renier Cronje and Francois van Rooyen (overall second place) and Armand and Jano du Plessis (overall fifth place) were happy with their placings in the standard class.

More than 30 boats from all over the world were in action at the championships. Despite challenging weather conditions and strong winds it was a super competition.

The F1IBC said they want to promote the sport for the youth and they will be kicking off a development league for children between the age of 7 and 15 years old. Any enquiries about the sport, contact Jean Louw on 083 634 1171 or Heinrich Cloete on 067 884 7751.
