Lentswe, Orkney - A mother and her teenage son had a narrow escape when shots were fired at her car. They were in Goueweg near the intersection to Vaal Reefs on the R502 at 16:00 on Monday afternoon March 11 when the drive home turned into a nightmare.
“At first I thought someone crashed into us from behind when I felt the impact. I looked around and saw that it was not a car. Then there was another blow and I was convinced that we were being pelted with stones, because I have already heard that it happened there.
“The only thing that went through my mind was keeping my child safe. I told him to keep his head down and not to look back no matter what happened. I was really scared.’’ She continued driving and first stopped at Orkney Police Station where she told police officers what had happened.
“They agreed that there were bullet holes in my rear window. I cannot say whether my vehicle was a target or whether it was stray bullets that hit the car. It worries me because I drive that road often.’’
She is an employee of a courier company and therefore wishes to remain anonymous. “I sometimes drive around with a lot of cash and don’t want to make myself a target.”
Col Adele Myburgh, police spokesperson, confirmed that the police are investigating a case of attempted murder.
“The area where it happened is known for the activities of illegal miners so it could be that it was stray bullets that hit the car.’’
