Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Four accused, including a dismissed police officer, were expected to make a second appearance in the Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court this week for unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition. Thembinkosi Mbatha (30), Motsaathebe Kopano (51), Gareng Dikgang (35) and Fikile Darala (51) initially appeared in court on July 10.

They were expected back in court on Wednesday July 17.

The suspects were arrested in Klerksdorp at about 09:50 on Monday July 8 by members of Tactical Response Team (TRT).

“Members who were on patrol, spotted a Toyota Condor of which the occupants allegedly committed business robbery at Ottosdal. It is alleged that before coming to a halt, the occupants of the car, threw out a firearm through the window. During the search, the members found a magazine loaded with eight bullets and two police appointment cards belonging to Motsaathebe Kopano.

“The accused were then arrested. Preliminary investigation revealed that Kopano, is a former police officer who was dismissed a few years ago. At this stage, the possibility of the accused facing more charges, cannot be ruled out,” said Brig Sabata Mokgwabone, police spokesperson.
