Lentswe, Klerksdorp - A joint operation by the Provincial Anti-Gang, Organised Crime and Klerksdorp Tactical Response Team (TRT) resulted in the arrest of four alleged extortionists in Jouberton last week. “The suspects; aged between 34 and 42, were apprehended after they went to the taxi rank construction site at Ext 19, Jouberton where they reportedly threatened employees, demanded work and money from the site manager.

They were arrested on July 10,” said Brig Sabata Mokgwabone, police spokesperson.

Consequent to registration of the case and prosecution led investigation, the team pounced on the suspects. All four of them including the one presumed to be the leader of Al-Qaeda gang, were also linked with four separate cases of murder, which were committed in October 2023 in Jouberton. Three of the said cases are ongoing.

“The team seized a Toyota Hilux and BMW vehicles. All four suspects were expected to appear in the Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court, facing charges of extortion and intimidation.”

The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena said that the arrests will without doubt send a clear message that criminality including at construction sites, will not be tolerated.
