Lentswe, Orkney - Nine illegal immigrants were caught at the big roadblock held on the Orkney/Klerksdorp road on Tuesday morning 23 January.

The roadblock was manned by the police, SANDF, local and provincial traffic officers and immigration officers and is part of the Operation Shanela campaign which runs until March.

According to WO Elize van Schalkwyk, police spokesperson, similar roadblocks will be held more often on roads in the Kosh Area in an attempt to combat crime. There is a particular focus on drunk driving, undocumented persons, possession of illegal firearms and ammunition.

During this week’s roadblock, which was held between 06:00 and 14:00 near the Leeudoringstad four-way crossing, 26 traffic fines were issued. The traffic department also executed 21 arrest warrants and collected R30 600 in outstanding traffic fines. A total of 120 vehicles were searched.
