Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Residents of the City of Matlosana must brace themselves for an increase in their monthly utility expenses following the council’s approval of the 2025/2026 Medium Term Revenue and Expenditure Framework (MTREF) last week. The new budget, effective from July 1, introduces upward adjustments across various service tariffs, including electricity, water, sanitation, and waste removal, alongside changes to property rates.
Where did Matlosana’s money go?
Lentswe, Klerksdorp - This week the City of Matlosana needed to explain R1,1 billion of unauthorised expenditure. The NW Provincial Legislature standing committee on provincial public accounts chaired by Hon Smuts Matshe held a Municipal Finance Management Act public hearing on Wednesday June 4. The hearing with the Matlosana Local Municipality was to account on the R1,1 billion unauthorised expenditure incurred on the 2023/24 financial year. According to the 2023/24 audit report, the unauthorised expenditure was as a result of overspending of budget.
Overall drop in NW crime stats reported
Lentswe, Potchefstroom - The North West Province has reported a significant 7.6% reduction in community-reported crimes for the fourth quarter of 2024/2025 (January to March 2025), encompassing 1 972 fewer cases compared to the same period last year.
Operation Shanela ropes in more arrests
Lentswe, Klerksdorp - As part of stamping the authority of the state, the weekly High Density Operation Shanela operations resulted in the arrest of 771 suspects for different crimes. The operations, conducted between May 26 and June 1, among others, focused on stop and searches, roadblocks, vehicle check points (VCPs), high-visibility patrols inclu-ding foot patrols, the tracing of wanted suspects, the confiscation of illegal firearms as well as visits to liquor outlets and taverns.
Drop in fuel prices
Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The Department of Petroleum and Mineral Resources has published the official fuel price adjustments that took effect on Wednesday June 4. Fuel prices saw a small cut of 5 cents per litre for 93 and 95 petrol, and a cut of 37 cents per litre for diesel. The price of illuminating paraffin fell by 56 cents per litre and LPGAs by 89 cents per kg.
