Lentswe, Orkney - Nine illegal immigrants were caught at the big roadblock held on the Orkney/Klerksdorp road on Tuesday morning 23 January.

The roadblock was manned by the police, SANDF, local and provincial traffic officers and immigration officers and is part of the Operation Shanela campaign which runs until March.

According to WO Elize van Schalkwyk, police spokesperson, similar roadblocks will be held more often on roads in the Kosh Area in an attempt to combat crime. There is a particular focus on drunk driving, undocumented persons, possession of illegal firearms and ammunition.

During this week’s roadblock, which was held between 06:00 and 14:00 near the Leeudoringstad four-way crossing, 26 traffic fines were issued. The traffic department also executed 21 arrest warrants and collected R30 600 in outstanding traffic fines. A total of 120 vehicles were searched.

 

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Swift police action led to the recovery of various firearms stolen on New Year’s Eve when a gunshop in Irenepark was broken into. Three suspects, aged 36, 34 and 26, were arrested after a shootout with police officers in Alabama on Monday January 15. WO Amogelang Malwetse, spokesperson of the Hawks said a multi-disciplinary team were busy with an operation to track down perpetrators involved in business burglaries in Klerksdorp. The team consisted the Klerksdorp Hawks, Priority Crime Management Centre, Special Task Force, National Intervention Unit, Local Criminal Record Centre and the District Illegal mining task team members. They were acting on intelligence when they spotted an Audi TT in Alabama. “The vehicle did not stop when the team directed it to do so. A shootout ensued between the police and suspects. No injuries were reported and three suspects inside the TT were arrested and four firearms recovered in the vehicle.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The Orkney & Klerksdorp Animal Shelter has expressed its concern about motorists who break the speed limit and do not consider animals along and in the road. A motorist hit two cows outside Kanana on the Orkney road on Sunday January 14. The animals graze in the area and are usually led across the road by 10:00 and then in the late afternoon.

Lentswe, Jouberton - A Jouberton man is still recovering from an attack where he lost his testicle after allegedly being groped by a prominent leader in ward 7 of the ANC in Matlosana. Samuel Tsambe (58) from ext 22, Jouberton said he struggles to regain his composure after the ANC deputy secretary, Nomsa Melengwana, allegedly squeezed and twisted his private parts for almost ten minutes in a dispute over an office key. “Afterwards I was so weak, I just fell to the ground,’’ he told Lentswe. He said the incident happened in November at a RDP construction site where he worked as a caretaker. “She wanted the key and I didn’t want to give it to her, and that’s when she grabbed me between the legs.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - An aspiring professional football player from Klerksdorp was offered a scholarship opportunity to join the Putnam Science Academy in Connecticut, USA.
The bursary consists of an academic and soccer bursary. Lebohang MR Mathikga (18) has his heart set on joining the US school. He played from THS Klerksdorp from 2019 until 2022 and then went on to play in the United Kingdom. More recently he trained with the pro club Al Nasr SC in Dubai.
The financial aid package provided by the school amounts to more than R1 million but the young man still needs about R175 000 to cover the costs of extras that includes uniforms and health insurance.
