Lentswe, Stilfontein - Two groups of illegal miners appeared in the local magistrate’s court to face the long arm of the law. The police also confiscated various good destined for zama-zamas.
Eighteen illegal miners were sentenced in the Stilfontein Magistrates’ Court to 120 days imprisonment on Friday February 9, for contravening the Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act.
Innocent until proven guilty
Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Matlosana Municipality CFO will stay in her position despite being criminally charged with corruption.
In a council meeting on Tuesday February 13 the ANC, supported by the EFF, defended the decision not to suspend Mercy Phetla, saying she is innocent until proven guilty. Cllr Gerhard Strydom said the fact that she is standing trial for corruption means that according to the regulations, there is reasonable cause that an act of misconduct has been committed. The DA called for the special council meeting proposing that she be suspended from her position and barred from entering the municipal building until the criminal investigation is finalised.
World Day of Prayer for Women
Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The 94th World Prayer Day for Women that is happening next month will be held at the Reformed Church Morester.
This annual event where women all over the world gather to pray, will be held on Friday March 1 at 10:00. The church is situated at 10 Charl de Klerk Street, Klerksdorp. Women of all denominations in the Kosh Area are invited to attend the service.
The theme this year is: “I beg you... Bear with one another in Love”. The country of focus, already selected 7 years ago by the international committee, is: Palestine.

Drummie needs your help
entswe, Klerksdorp - Boitumelo Lekgwenyane Molaoloa is a vibrant 12 year-old who is in Grd 7 at KPS. She has been a drummie since 2017 and she loves the sport. Now she has received an invitation to participate in the World Cup of Majorette Sport in Agen, France from July 18-21. It, however, is very expensive. Her mom, Seipati, is asking for assistance to make this dream of her daughter come true. “Please assist us by donating as the total cost of the whole trip is R48 000 and we struggle to afford it,” she said.
City suffers R1 billion loss
Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The Auditor General questions the viability of the municipality as a going concern after suffering a financial loss close to R1 billion.
The Auditor-General’s annual report for the financial year 2022/23 was tabled at a council meeting last week.
Cllr Johannes le Grange, DA caucus leader, commented by saying the DA has for years consistently raised concerns over the administration’s reluctance to rationalise the budget in line with Treasury guidelines.
