STELLALANDER-VRYBURG: The African National Congress (ANC) Caucus in the North West Provincial Legislature on Thursday, 10 October announced four key appointments aimed at strengthening governance and accountability within its legislative sphere.

This follows the election of Mokone Collen Maine, MPL as Deputy Speaker during an earlier special legislature session held at the Matlosana City Council Chambers. The ANC Chief Whip, Motlalepula Rosho in congratulating Maine alluded that he brings knowledge and experience as a former member of the NCOP who had also served as a Whip for NW permanent delegates. The appointment of Maine as a presiding officer follows the resignation of the incumbent, Tshepo Khoza as Deputy Speaker and member of the provincial legislature representing the ANC. Maine had resigned as MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation on 1 October 2024 paving the way for Premier Lazarus Mokgosi to appoint Galebekwe Virginia Tlhapi to the portfolio she had occupied before the May 29, 2024 National and Provincial elections. ANC Caucus also acknowledged the swearing in of Nathan Oliphant by the NWPL Speaker, Desbo Mohono as a new member of the NWPL to fill the vacancy that was created by the resignation of Khoza from the ANC provincial candidates list. Caucus strongly believes that these appointments will reposition the province to consolidate, deepen and advance the National Democratic Revolution (NDR) and now the ANC has the opportunity to exercise and use state power to propel the province forward. The Caucus also welcomed in its midst the appointment of Karabo Magagane, MPL as the Deputy Chief Whip replacing Tlhapi, the former Deputy Chief Whip. Magagane served various structures both in the legislature and her party the ANC, the roles she continues to perform admirably and with deep commitment in service of her constituencies.
“We will surely ensure that the people of NW come first through acceleration of service delivery and strengthened tools of oversight and accountability. We will leave no stone unturned to respond to the voice of the electorate to do more together,” Rosho emphasised.
