STELLALANDER-VRYBURG: Vryburg Police have launched a murder and inquest investigation following a shocking incident in the Colourblock area, Extension 25, on Saturday, 7 December.
According to police spokesperson Adele Myburgh, a 27-year-old man allegedly attacked his neighbor, a mother holding her one-year-old son, at approximately 14:00. The man, armed with a knife, forcefully grabbed the toddler from the mother’s arms. Despite the mother’s cries for help and the intervention of the community members, the suspect retreated into his house with the boy, locking the door. Inside the house, he allegedly stabbed the toddler to death before taking his own life. Both were declared dead at the scene.
The incident has left the community reeling, particularly as it occurred during South Africa’s annual No Violence Against Women and Children campaign, observed from 25 November to 10 December. This initiative aims to raise awareness about the need to combat gender-based violence and protect vulnerable members of society. Outraged residents gathered at the scene, expressing their sorrow and disbelief over the senseless killing of a defenseless child. Police investigations are ongoing, and the community continues to mourn this devastating loss.
