Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - Basil Michaelides passed away this week. He was 95 years old.

The patriarch of the Michaelides family was surrounded by his loved ones when he passed away at home at 15:22 on Tuesday July 9. He was well-known as a businessman in Klerksdorp and started the popular MCC Spar in Klerksdorp. Until very recently, he was still active the in store’s daily running.

According to his daughter-in-law, Angela, Basil moved to Klerksdorp in 1962 from Welkom and was a founding member of Spar SA. She describes him as the local godfather, lover of all animals and one who everybody asked for advice.

 

 

 

“My mother-in-law passed away in 1986. He was a widower for 38 years,” she said. “He told everybody I was his favourite daughter-in-law and how I took good care of him, but never to me. I will miss him dearly.” 

Uncle Basil, as he was known, had three sons and five grandchildren.

No funeral details were known at the time of going to print.
