Klerksdorp Record, Stilfontein - A rapist was hiding in Taung for more than a year. He, however, returned to the scene of the crime and that is where police nabbed him.

The Stilfontein Regional Court handed down a life term imprisonment to Rebaone Victor Moremong (26) for raping a 30-year-old woman. The judgement was made on October 24.

The woman was raped in the early morning hours of May 1 in 2021 after meeting her at a tavern in Jakaranda.

According to Col Adéle Myburgh, police spokesperson, Moremong lured his victim to his shack. “He promised to give her money but he overpowered and assaulted her, undressed and raped her. The woman fought back and managed to flee from the scene, where two unknown males in the street assisted her and took her to Klerksdorp Thuthuzela Centre.’’

The rapist disappeared but was eventually arrested back in Jakaranda in September 2022. He remained behind bars for the duration of his trial.

The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt-Genl Sello Kwena, and the Director for Public Prosecution, Dr Rachel Makhari, welcomed the sentence and applauded the Investigating Officer, W/O Dave Venter of Klerksdorp Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, and the prosecutor, Chris Kok, for their teamwork in ensuring that the accused is convicted.
