Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The Klerksdorp Regional Court sentenced Papa Madule (29) to 15 years imprisonment last week. During sentencing on March 14 he was declared unfit to possess a firearm. This follows the murder of Desmond Tutu (25) of Kanana who was murdered in February of 2022.
It transpired during the trial that Tutu was with his two friends when Madule emerged from a nearby tavern.
“He asked Tutu if he was a member of the SVK gang. Although the victim replied that he was not, the accused stabbed him in the chest with a knife and then ran away.
Police and paramedics were summoned to the scene, where Tutu was declared dead,’’ said Brig Sabata Mokgwabone, police spokesperson.
The Provincial Anti-Gang Unit investigated and arrested Madule a month later.
He was granted R5 000 bail and following the trial, he was found guilty and sentenced.
The Acting Provincial Police Commissioner of North West, Major General Patrick Asaneng, commended the investigating officer, W/O Benett Tyukatha, and the prosecutor, Adv Cassius Mona, for working together with other stakeholders to ensure that the accused was convicted.
He further stated that the sentence will serve as a warning that gangsterism and related criminality will be dealt with effectively.
