NOORDWESTER – WOLMARANSSTAD - The Anti-Gang Unit arrested three suspects on Wednesday, 16 October - one of which is a Ward Councillor - for extortion.
These arrests follows extensive investigations that indicated that a contractor, who was awarded a contract to build a supermarket in Extension 10, had allegedly been blackmailed since June. The contractor contacted the local Councillor and asked for assistance to employ locals, thereafter he was allegedly threatened numerous times and payments demanded for his safety and smooth running of the building project.

The contractor reported the matter to the police in early September, who after thorough investigations, arrested the trio.
Oratile Mafulako (19), Ward Councillor Mpho Andrew Hlongwane (46) and Mosimanegape Donald Sejeso (25) appeared before the Wolmaransstad Magistrates’ Court for the first time on Wednesday, 16 October, they re-appeared before the same court on Friday, 18 October and were granted R1000 bail each. Their next court appearance will be on Friday, 13 December.
The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena congratulated the investigation team for their diligence that led to these arrests. He reminded the community that extortion is a criminal offence where an individual illegally obtains money, property or services from another person by threatening harm or using coercive measures. These threats can involve physical violence, property damage, accusations of crime, or exposure of sensitive information.
