RUSTENBURG HERALD - RUSTENBURG - Scores of Rustenburg motorists have been bracing themselves for unprecedented traffic congestion since the early morning peak hour on Wednesday this week with the closure of the crucial Kruger Street Bridge by the Bakwena N1N4 this week.
As reported earlier on, the Rustenburg section of the Bakwena N4 is currently being prepared for the long-awaited dualling project - the process whereby the N4 will be transformed into a dual carriageway as traffic volumes have more than doubled on the N4 over the past five to seven years.

And this is the “good” news - the bad news is that the Kruger Street bridge will be closed for a period of 11 months until 30 July 2025, Charmaine van Wyk, Spokesperson of the Bakwena N1N4 told Rustenburg Herald. Kruger Street bridge crosses over the N4 between Helen Joseph and Dr Moroka. Motorists are urged to make use of alternative routes such as Helen Joseph Interchange/Dr Moroka. Motorists commuting between Protea Park North and/or South can use one or other of the following routes to get to Helen Joseph Drive:
• President Mbeki Drive
• Boven Street
• Mispel Street
Bakwena encourages road users to adhere to the traffic accommodation road signs, obey speed restrictions and exercise caution and patience while we undertake these works that will enhance your driving experience along the N1N4 route and most importantly improve the overall safety.
“For traffic and construction updates please follow us on X -                 @bakwenan1n4,” Van Wyk said.
Meanwhile the acting Spokesperson of the Rustenburg Municipality - Odirile Madiba - assured Rustenburg Herald that arrangements have been made for additional traffic controllers to help countless  Rustenburgers on their way to their kids’ school or to the office over the next 11 months.
This was one of the issues to be streamlined during a convention of Rustenburg Traffic authorities at the Rustenburg Civic Centre in preparation for the operation on Monday.
