Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - Prof Raymond Parsons, well-known economist of the NWU Business School, addressed an enthusiastic audience at Villa Maria on October 10.

The theme of his speech was “Active citizenry and social cohesion”. He was a guest of the Rotary Club of Orkney. Parsons congratulated Rotary for asking an economist to speak midst grim headlines about unemployment, inflation, interest rates, the Rand, social unrest and socio-economic challenges.

“What should be done about it and how can we make a difference? Luckily, Rotary is composed of business, professional and community leaders. That is the perfect audience,” he said.

He used the recently released National Planning Commission’s Ten year review as reference that targeted a 5.4% growth rate in 2030. “The situation is rather bleak - actual growth rate is only 1, 1%,” he said.

Rotarians qualify as active citizenry and they are unpaid volunteers - keeping the community together. “Let us all work together for the future of a better SA,” he closed off.
