Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - The South African National Blood Service hosted the long-awaited Donor for Life Awards at Vintage Affair in Songloed last weekend.

This special event, on Saturday November 2, honours and celebrates the life-saving contributions of blood donors who were due to be recognized in 2021 but were delayed due to the global Covid-19 pandemic.

During the peak of the pandemic, much of the world was under lockdown, and many SANBS functions were put on hold. Now, as the organisation works to honour and celebrate those who continued to donate blood during such uncertain times, the 2024 awards served as a much-needed opportunity to express gratitude to these unsung heroes.

Among the awardees was Pieter Fourie, who has donated an extraordinary 300 units of blood throughout his lifetime. He began his journey as a blood donor in 1965, continues to be an exemplary figure of generosity and dedication in the community. His contributions have saved countless lives, making him a cornerstone of the SANBS’ mission to ensure a steady and reliable blood supply.

Other notable milestones were also celebrated during the event, including 200 units (Cornelia Barkhuizen, Gerhard Dreyer, Daniel Nel, Stephanus Beets, and Gideon Roux), 225 units (Desmond Davis), 250 units (Johannes Karsten) and 275 units (Rudi Peens).
