Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - All leads are followed up to catch the criminal that destroyed the massive figure in front of a local art gallery this week.

The statue in front of B Sure Brokers housing The B Gallery in Michael Street, Klerksdorp was toppled over in what is described as an act of vandalism.

Gallery curator Zet Havenga said CCTV footage shows that it happened just after 04:30 on Tuesday morning September 17 in the pouring rain. Footage shows a SUV stopping next to the statue and one person (maybe the driver) getting out of the vehicle. “We do not understand the motive. The statue would never fit in the vehicle. I think they only wanted to cause damage. We are offering a reward of R20 000 to anyone with information that would lead us to find and convict the culprit. We are currently reviewing more footage from CCTV in the neighbourhood to get a clearer picture of what went down this morning,’’ she said.

The statue was erected in 2019 in front of the gallery and named Art Spirit in memory of well-known local artists who have passed away.
The police were called to the scene and a case of damage to property was registered.

Anyone with information regarding the incident, hoping to claim the reward can contact B Sure on 018 462 9155.

The statue has since been repaired and is back in his old spot in front of the gallery.
