Klerksdorp Record, Mahikeng - The North West Premier announced a significant injection of funds into key services and infrastructure, with direct benefits planned for the community of Klerksdorp and the broader Dr Kenneth Kaunda District.
The provincial government has approved an additional R1.4 billion in its 2025 Provincial Adjustment Budget, prioritizing Health, Education, and Public Works and Roads.
A major focus for the local area is on water security. Premier Kagiso Lazarus Mokgosi confirmed that the Matlosana Municipality is currently refurbishing the Electrical and Mechanical Equipment at key water pump stations, including those in Jouberton, Ellaton, Kanana, and Khuma. This R39.5 million project is nearing completion and is expected to ensure a more consistent water supply for these communities.
The health sector received a substantial boost, with R200 million allocated specifically for the employment of additional nurses and doctors.
Furthermore, the province is procuring 54 ambulances, which are expected to be delivered before the year’s end. This is a critical investment that will strengthen universal access to healthcare and improve service capacity across the district.
In terms of local mobility, plans are underway to bring similar commuter transport services, mirroring the successful Ngaka Modiri Molema rollout, closer to the residents of the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District.
The Premier also addressed issues of local governance, confirming that the Section 106 investigation into allegations of maladministration and corruption within the Matlosana Municipality has concluded. He said the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) is now tasked with implementing the findings and recommendations.
On road infrastructure, the province has committed R100 million for the ‘yellow fleet’ to facilitate joint road maintenance initiatives in districts. An additional R256 million has been allocated to the Department of Public Works and Roads, which includes R150 million specifically designated for the repair of roads and bridges damaged by floods earlier this year.
These localized efforts form part of the province’s broader strategies to stimulate inclusive growth, improve infrastructure, and address the high rates of unemployment, which has seen a 2% drop with the creation of 42 000 jobs recorded in the latest quarterly labour force survey.
