Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - The City of Matlosana is ready to issue fines in accordance with municipal bylaws for those irresponsible with fireworks. This week the municipality issued a warning to residents against the use of illegal fireworks. Anyone found in contravention of the city regulations will face fines in accordance with the municipal Nuisances and Public Behaviour By-law and the National Control of Explosives/Fireworks Act.

“While fireworks can be beautiful and exciting to watch, they also pose potential dangers. They can cause damage to property, and harm family members or pets. We encourage residents to keep a close eye on their pets and where possible, to keep them safely indoors. Animals are often frightened by the sounds of fireworks, which can lead to distress or attempts to run away,’’ says Tebogo Ramone, acting municipal spokesperson. Residents are reminded that, according to city by-laws, only consumer fireworks may be used in residential areas on approved days.

She shared the following safety tips:
- Ensure that children are supervised at all times when near fireworks.
- Keep pets indoors in a safe, quite room to shield them from loud noises.
- Fireworks should only be used in a safe, well-ventilated outdoor area and never indoors.
- Never hold lit fireworks in your hand, as this can result to severe injuries.
- When igniting or detonating a firework, do not point it at any person, animal, building, or vehicle.
- If a firework fails to ignite, do not attempt to re-light it for at least 15 minutes.
- Keep a bucket of water or a fire extinguisher nearby in case of a malfunction.
- Only use fireworks as directed on the packaging, and ensure that loose clothing is not hanging over the fireworks when lighting them.
- Lastly, never discharge fireworks while under the influence of alcohol.
