Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - Community Safety and Transport Management MEC Wessels Morweng is making good on his promises by conducting unannounced visits to local police stations.

Following the wide-ranging complaints about policing in and around Klerksdorp, the MEC conducted an unannounced visit to police stations in Klerksdorp and Jouberton on Monday night August 5.

He expressed his satisfaction on the status of the two stations besides challenges they face daily.

“Our communities are complaining about police arriving late at the crime scenes, yet they (police) struggle with resources. The issue of shortage of personnel is a serious issue that we must be able to address with our Minister of Police through our MinMec platforms, however, we must also have an engagement with the Minister regarding our situation in the Province,” he said.

Morweng further committed to strengthen the relations between the communities and police in creating a safer environment. The two stations are experiencing a high number of Gender Based Violence cases, burglary, car theft, rape and murder.

On day two of his visit, the MEC accompanied by the Executive Mayor of Matlosana, spearheaded the Dr KK District Women’s month road safety joint operation. The road block was conducted on the N12 at Stilfontein. Mayor Fikile Mahlophe indicated that there will be zero tolerance for criminal activities in the city. He also encouraged commuters to be alert and drive safe to their destinations.
