Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - The Office of the Executive Mayor hosted the 2023 Matric Excellence Awards in partnership with Harmony Gold Mine and North West Department of Education at Klerksdorp Recreation Centre last week.
The ceremony was held to recognize and commend matriculation learners who achieved outstanding academic performance against all odds. The event was attended by the Executive Mayor of the City of Matlosana, Cllr James Tsolela, Members of the Mayoral Committee (MMCs), management of Harmony Gold Mine, representatives from the Department of Education, and parents/guardians of the learners.
At the ceremony, the top 10 candidates from ten schools who achieved the highest marks were acknow-ledged. The city recognized former headboy, Sihle Mokobe from New Vision Secondary as the number 1 top-performing learner with a total of 1627 marks overall.
In his speech, the Mayor congratulated the 11 schools that performed between 90-100%, with Hoërskool Wesvalia and three other schools obtaining a 100% pass rate.
The schools that performed between 80%-90% were led by New Vision at an 89.3% pass rate. A farm school in Matlosana, Phakela Secondary, was also acknowledged with a pass rate of 85.0%.
In the category of best schools with high enrolment, the Executive Mayor congratulated Tshebedisano Secondary with 92.59% followed by THS Klerksdorp with 92.37%.
In the category of schools with the highest number of distinctions, two of the top schools, Wesvalia with 203 distinctions and KHS with 117 distinctions, were among those that were congratulated.
In his closing remarks, the Executive Mayor highlighted that the 2023 matric results affirm Matlosana’s position as a key player in the academic land-scape.
