Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - The Aurum Klerksdorp Marathon was held the past weekend at Hoërskool Wesvalia and the race saw a record number of entries this year.

This is the eighth year that the marathon is held in Klerksdorp. Visiting running clubs from Mafikeng, Lichtenburg, Botswana all thanked Klerksdorp and its people for their friendliness and support to runners along the route. The feedback from the approximately 1 500 runners were all exceptional with everyone promising to return in 2026.

Sunday February 9 was a particularly hot day which is not ideal for runners spending up to five hours in the sun, but amazing times were clocked. In the men’s marathon section Impala Marathon Club from Rustenburg did a clean sweep taking all three podium positions. The winner, Joseph Majoro, ran a personal best time and finished in 2:25 minutes.

In the ladies marathon, Rustenburg Club - Run/Walk for Life, took first and third place, while Comrades runner-up in 2023 Adele Broodryk finished in second place. Roue Steenkamp who is new to marathon running, won the race in a blistering time of 3:00 hours.

The half marathon 21.1km men’s race was won by another runner of Impala Marathon Club, Samuel Matsepe, in 1:07, while the ladies’ race was won by Klerksdorp lady Annique Burger of Nedbank Running Club in 01:28:16.

The 10km race was a tight battle to the finish line where a few seconds meant the difference between first and second place in both men’s and ladies’ races.

This race saw only local runners taking top spots.

The men’s race was won by Potch runner Orno Nako in 30 minutes 21 seconds and second place was 33 seconds behind him.  Local lady Elria Bester won the ladies’ race in 45 minutes 38 seconds and the second woman was 40 seconds after. She is Mamiky Marumo from Orkney.

Klerksdorp Marathon and its management thanked all businesses and individuals that hosted water points along the route and contributed to the success of the marathon.
