Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - Padel is a new sport in South Africa, although it has been around the world since the 1970s.

Various courts have popped up in Klerksdorp and there are some more in the pipeline. Klerksdorp Padel in Elm Street, opposite Curro, has three courts and according to the owners they are booming.

Danie Jacobs of Klerksdorp Record, after spending an afternoon on the padel court with the owners, said he loves it. He played tennis and squash regularly and wanted to find out how the two sports are combined. “It is mainly tennis, but as in squash the walls (glass in this case) are in play. A padel racket is solid, has holes and has no strings. The scoring is the same as tennis,” he said.

Klerksdorp Padel is a popular spot to play the sport. “We went live on September 19 and players are lining up to play. This sport is infectious,’’ said Nikeel Morar, resident coach.

The Klerksdorp Padel Premier League kicked off and the Padel Teams League will start this weekend. Klerksdorp Padel also boasts a new club café, prayer room and a kids’ zone. Co-owner Mo Cassim said they are also a party venue and it is safe for small children.
