Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - Chess players from the region are making waves in their community.

The Dr Kenneth Kaunda chess region was the only NW region to be invited to take part at the Gauteng Inter-Regional Championship this past weekend at the Emerald Casino in Vanderbijlpark.

The tournament was hosted by Sedibeng Region, and six regions participated:  Tshwane; Sedibeng; Ekurhuleni; Johannesburg Metro; West Rand and Dr KK. Dr KK was represented by eight teams (under 8; 10; 12; 14; 16; 18, 20 and adult + senior section).

The u8s (team manager Maryke Van Staden) and u20s (team manager Maphasa Faku) ended second in their categories and won silver medals. Siyabonga Mokobe (Arena Candidate Master) won the board three prize u18 category and received a trophy.

The region needs sponsorship and partnerships to support and develop chess players around Dr KK. They encourage all colleges/universities, schools and chess clubs from the region to come on board.
