NOORDWESTER – LICHTENBURG AREA - On 17 June, New Beginnings Support Group in collaboration with Department of Social Development, Biesiesvlei CPF and Department of Health, launched a Drug Awareness Week, starting at SA Living Water Ministry at Grasfontein.
On 20 June New Beginnings Support Group hosted a Drug Awareness event at Dudfield Road (dumping site) with the aim of raising drug awareness and the effects of drug abuse.

Amongst the presenters were Lesego Molefe, who educated the community about different types of drugs and how can they physically and psychologically harm them. Mosadi explained the different dynamics of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and reprimanded parents against abusing alcohol while pregnant. Tiisetso Dinko, assisted by New Beginnings Support Group, explained that he was trapped in the cycle of Nyaope for seven years, until he was assisted by a Social Worker from New Beginnings Support Group. Innocent Theko, who is also a drug survivor, described his journey of rehabilitation and the importance of supporting those who are addicted to drugs.
Matele from Department of Health and officials from Love Life emphasised mental health in depth, as well as how one should look after their bodies in the best way.
Amongst those present were Thusanang Trauma Centre official, Mashobane, who addressed the different dynamics of GBV and explained that alcohol abuse is one of the factors that leads to GBV.
Phokompe from Department of Education encouraged parents to take children to school and be present at meetings, as well as the day to day needs of the children. Constable Matli from SAPS Lichtenburg supported Phompe’s statement and explained that they are currently experiencing serious behavioural problems at various schools. Parents rarely attend disciplinary hearing meetings when called to school. 
Ward Councilor Motsepe reprimanded parents against child neglect, which is reported to be very prominent in that area. Nelly Shashape, Social Worker from Social Development, explained to parents the offenses associated with child neglect and encouraged parents to fully utilise services rendered by Department of Social Development.
