NOORDWESTER - WOLMARANSSTAD - A male (20) was expected to appear in the Wolmaransstad Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 28 October, for robbery (aggravating).
The suspect’s court appearance follows his apprehension on Saturday, 26 October, by members of the Provincial Anti-Gang Unit. It is alleged that the suspect and two other males armed with pangas, went to a supermarket construction site on Sunday, 6 October, in Wolmaransstad. The trio allegedly intimidated and demanded money from the employees.
The suspects then searched and robbed two employees of their R800 and R150 respectively, and left.
The matter was reported to the police and upon receiving the case on Saturday, 26 October, members of Anti-Gang expedited investigation, which resulted in the arrest. Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect is a member of a gang known as “Mathinta”.
The gang members allegedly target contactors, employees at construction sites, tuck shops as well as members of the community, among others, by demanding protection fees and committing robberies.
Investigation into the matter including the tracing of the remaining suspects, continues. Police cannot rule out the possibility of linking the suspect to other cases.
Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, applauded the members for the success and pointed out that those who rob or request money or services without a legitimate reason from the public, communities and businesses, will be dealt with harshly.
