NOORDWESTER - BIESIESVLEI – Child Protection Week, from 25 May to 1 June, is a collective responsibility of individuals, organisations, and the government in creating a safe and supportive environment for all children.
This year’s theme was “Working together to end violence against children”.
Furthermore, the South African Police Services in Biesiesvlei partnered with the Community Police Forum (CPF) on Wednesday, 28 May visiting Tshiamelo Primary School. The organisation was accompanied by Department of Community Safety and Transport Management (COSATMA), Thusanang Trauma Centre, Community in Blue Patrollers, Sector 2 CPF Sub-Forum and the Youth Crime Prevention Forum.
The aim of the campaign was raising awareness about children’s rights, bullying, sexual offenses, substance abuse, dangerous weapons, Gender-based Violence and Femicide (GBVF). The government proclaimed the week of 25 May until 1 June as a reminder of the importance of raising awareness about child protection, early detection of abuse and neglect, and the need for swift intervention.
A member of the local CPF, Mr Moikabi Nyakgosi, opened the event with a word of prayer, followed by Mrs Flora Masiga, educator, who welcomed all attendees.
Mr Pogiso Dinana, CPF Chairperson, elaborated on the purpose of the gathering with the emphasis that children must know their rights and live up to them. Between items, Mr Dinana amused the learners with icebreakers.
Mr Akanyang Mashobane from Thusanang Trauma Centre, presented a talk about GBVF and the Station Commander, Captain Thandiswa Mahube, addressed the learners on bullying.
Mrs Moleti Gaboutloeloe from COSATMA gave insight on dangerous weapons and sexual offences. Thereafter, Seargent Mpho Setlhare, Communication Officer, educated learners about substance abuse.
To conclude the day’s proceedings, there was a Q&A sessions and learners were rewarded with promotional material (squeeze bottles, pencil cases and rulers). Mr Thapelo Senokwane, educator, thanked the organisers, stakeholders and role-players for their contributions and participation.
