Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - A trio of visitors from the United Kingdom visited the local museum and old cemetery this week.

Bert Gaffen, Klerksdorp museum historian, took the three tourists on a tour of the Old Cemetery Complex next to Dawkinsville where they visited the graves of Imperial Yeomanry and other British soldiers who were killed in various military actions around Klerksdorp during the Anglo Boer War (1899-1902).

“They laid a wreath at the Imperial Yeomanry Memorial in the Old Cemetery, honouring the soldiers from the Shropshire Yeomanry who fell around our city. They also were interested to learn more about the graves of the victims of both the wartime concentration camps,’’ he shared.

Gaffen was thankful that the municipality’s park section as well as Dirk Bloem of FAK Sentraal were helpful in cutting the grass at the old cemetery earlier this week before the visit.

The tourists concluded their visit with a short tour through the Museum and expressed a keen interest in the various exhibits.
