Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - The Art Attack phenomenon that is held annually at Matlosana Mall for the past three years, is finally getting the recognition it deserves.

This is how Zet Havenga, organiser, describes this past weekend where artists, dancers, musicians, and “everything arts and culture’’ transformed the popular shopping centre into a hub of the arts. “It was amazing. Art and culture have no borders, it brings people together and works with your soul,’’ she says.

Her vision for Art Attack is to bring art to the shopping centres because “people don’t visit galleries anymore’’. “I still want to expose them to the beauty of art and you know what, I think it is working.’’

Zet tells how she witnessed a seven year old boy taking his birthday money to buy his first piece of art from local artist, Daniel Tladi. “He told his mother that he likes Daniel’s work and wants to use the money he got for his birthday to buy something from him, and that is what she did. How nice is that?’’

The Art Attack has also expanded into a sip & paint event at a restaurant as well as an art workshop for children that was held on Sunday. Models from JannyDjan in Potchefstroom dressed up as store mannequins while local artists propped up their easels in the long mall hallway, painting their hearts out. There was also dancers and musicians who performed. “Several of the artists sold some of their art, and some received commissions. That is what we aimed to get from this experience, to bring art closer to the people,’’ said Zet.

The weekend would not have been possible without the support of sponsors and the management of Matlosana Mall. “We are thankful for every bit of investment in the arts. Thank you for the support.’’
