Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - Next week, a mobile cancer screening unit will park in Klerksdorp with state of the art equipment to provide mammography and breast ultrasounds.

These screening services will be done by female staff. The mobile unit will be stationed at the parking lot of Builder’s Warehouse from February 3 until February 14. Inside you will find friendly female staff, state of the art equipment, air-conditioned rooms and private changing rooms.

Studies show that breast cancer is the most common cancer to affect women, however with early screening and quality treatment the survival rate significantly increases. Mammography plays a central role in the early detection of breast cancer and other breast diseases.

WHY GET A MAMMOGRAM?

Breast cancer has become a significant reality in recent times in many households. We are all affected by breast cancer, if not personally, by association through friends or colleagues.

Statistically, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women of all races, with a lifetime risk of 1 in 27 in South Africa. The incidence of breast cancer increases as women grow older, although women under the age of 40, especially those with a strong family history of breast cancer, are also commonly diagnosed in recent times.

We must realise that every person is at risk of developing breast cancer, it is our responsibility to take the necessary steps in taking care of ourselves, not only for our sake but also for our families and friends.

Early breast cancer treatment saves lives and leads to better treatment options and outcomes. Routinely, a mammogram consists of both a top and side view of each breast, however additional views can be taken. The mammogram is followed by breast ultrasound.  If necessary, conventional mammography is combined with tomosynthesis, breast biopsy or breast MRI.

Depending on the area that will be examined, you may want to wear loose, comfortable clothing. You may be asked to change into a gown for the examination and to remove any jewellery or other metallic items from your body before the examination.
