Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - Three men, driving an Isuzu bakkie, were arrested last week for possession of suspected stolen livestock.
The trio have been on the police radar for a while. They were stopped while on their way to Gauteng.
“Upon searching the vehicle, members of the Dr Kenneth Kaunda Operational Coordination Centre, Potchefstroom Flying Squad, Stock Theft Unit, Klerksdorp Visible Policing and JP Security, found the 26 goats worth R50 000. All three suspects were arrested after failing to account for the possession of the animals,” said Brig Sabata Mokgwabone, police spokesperson.
The suspects, aged between 25 and 33, were expected to appear in the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court this week.
The Acting Provincial Police Commissioner, Major General Asaneng indicated that theft of livestock especially small stock such as sheep and goats is as a threat to the livelihood of farmers. He said that these suspects like those arrested before, are linked to organised groupings that have been stealing stock in the province and selling such stolen stock in Gauteng where there is definitely a market for stolen stock.
“In addition to being charged for contravention of the Stock Theft Act, I have instructed that the police investigate contravention of among others, the Animal Identification Act, as well as any other applicable laws including asset forfeiture or instrumentality processes against the suspects,” he said.
