Klerksdorp Record, Orkney - Police in Orkney are investigating a shooting in the industrial area where a truck driver was shot by a traffic officer.

Details as to what happened at the scene of the crime on Sunday afternoon February 25 are still sketchy.

According to Lt Col Amanda Funani, police spokesperson, a murder case is under investigation. The shooting happened in Campion Street in the industrial area.

A photo that was taken from a nearby building that afternoon shows traffic cars and police on the scene. “In his statement the traffic officer says he pulled a truck off the road and wanted to issue the driver with a warning,’’ said Funani.

The cop asked for license and registration and that is when the driver ran away. “The traffic officer chased him and the victim allegedly took out a screw driver. That is when the traffic cop fired a warning shot and then shot the victim,’’ she said.

Klerksdorp Record was told that the victim bled out after the traffic cop handcuffed him.

According to Funani, the Public Prosecutor will decide if the traffic officer will be charged with murder or a lesser charge.

The deceased was not identified.
