Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - A major electricity outage and water shortage in several suburbs in Klerksdorp earlier this week were due to cable thieves ransacking municipal infrastructure.
The City of Matlosana’s security team deployed to protect the main substation in Ellaton as well as the sewage pump station in Swart Street is under siege. Problems began over the weekend when the city was replacing an electrical cable in Ellaton. Criminals planning to steal the cable in the open trench that was dug pounced on Sunday night.
Klerksdorp Record was informed that the security guards and the thieves, believed to be illegal miners, were involved in a shootout.
In a statement to the community on Monday January 29, the City of Matlosana said Klerksdorp CBD, Pienaarsdorp, Elandsheuwel, Ellaton and Randlespark are without electricity due the damage at the transformer at the municipal main substation.
Rowers sterf na jaagtog met polisie
Klerksdorp Rekord, Orkney - Twee voertuigdiewe is dood nadat hulle vir die polisie weggejaag het in die gesteelde voertuig en toe beheer verloor het.
Die voertuig is gedurende die nag van 23 Januarie by die taxi terminus gesteel waar die eienaar van die motor glo sy roes lê en afslaap het. Volgens kapt Aafje Botma, polisiewoordvoerder, is die 46-jarige man uit sy voertuig geruk en het die twee rowers daarin gespring en weggejaag.
Hungry Zama-zamas surrender
Klerksdorp Record, Orkney - More than 20 illegal miners were arrested after they surrendered themselves to police when they resurfaced from underground.
The Zama-zamas voluntarily exited the shaft in Lourenspark on Saturday January 27.
Brig Sabatha Mokgwabone, police spokesperson, said 23 men exited the shaft. “Two of the illegal miners were found with gold bearing material, and will also face charges to that affect.’’
Stolen stock halted in roadblock
Klerksdorp Record, Stilfontein - Mosimanegape Vincent Lekaota (31) was remanded in custody after appearing in the Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court last week for possession of suspected stolen livestock.
He appeared in court on Thursday January 25 and was expected to apply for bail this week.
According to Brig Sabata Mokgwabone, police spokesperson, Lekaota was arrested after members of Stilfontein Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit (STES) operationalised information regarding cattle, which were stolen in the vicinity of Schweizer-Reneke.
CFO’s future in the balance
Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - A special council meeting is scheduled for Thursday afternoon to discuss the future of Matlosana Municipality’s CFO who was arrested last week on charges of corruption.
Mercy Phetla (38) was released after local businessman TP “MacGyver’’ Mokasule paid her R35 000 bail. The two GMHM Construction and Projects employees, Matshepiso Mothelesane (39) and Nomthandazo Mokasule (49) who were arrested with her, were also released on R35 000 bail each. The company also paid their bail.
