Klerksdorp Rekord, Klerksdorp - A personal trainer from Klerksdorp is a new world champion in bodybuilding at an international competition that was held in England recently.
Marius van der Mescht qualified for the SA team to participate at the UIBFF World Bodybuilding championship on November 4. He won the category Men’s Physique Masters for bodybuilders over 40.
Now an accomplished bodybuilder and trainer, Marius describes his former self as looking like Gru, the main character in the animation movie Despicable Me. That was five years ago. “I started going to the gym to live a healthier lifestyle, and when I started noticing changes in my body, I just continued until I entered my first competition and from then on it was tickets,’’ he laughs.
Marius worked in retail for 22 years and with the stressful working environment he thought he was heading for a heart attack in his forties. “I changed my lifestyle by going to the gym and ended up changing my career too.’’
He resigned and did some courses in personal training and today he works as a personal trainer at a local gym. “Don’t ever think you are too old to do something,’’ he says.
Marius is thankful for his wife, Priscilla and two daughers who are his biggest fans.
