Klerksdorp Midweek, Klerksdorp - The North West Province Chess Federation competed in the National Schools Chess Championships held in Gqeberha from September 27-28. The team assembled at the Rio Casino Hotel on September 24 for training and preparations before departing for Gqeberha on September 25. The tournament featured fierce competition, with Western Cape winning gold, Gauteng securing silver, and KwaZulu-Natal taking home bronze.

The North West team finished fifth out of 9 teams, demonstrating remarkable skill and determination.

Individual achievements included silver medals for Atlegang Monchosi in the u/18 girls’ category and Unathi Meyambo in the u/15 girls’ category. Atlegang was also chosen to represent South Africa in Brazi. Both girls are from Matlosana Chess Academy under the leadership of Maphasa Faku and Nhamo Chakadindhano.

Sabatha Matsitse, President of the North West Province Chess Federation, expressed gratitude for the support received from the Department of Arts, Culture, Sports, and Recreation. Their assistance in covering transport, accommodation, meals, and team attire was crucial in providing a successful experience for the players.

He said: “While we may not have achieved gold this time, securing fifth position is a significant accomplishment and indicates the potential of our players. We are committed to developing creative and effective strategies to improve our performance in future tournaments, including participation in events such as the Moja Chess Extravaganza and the inaugural Mzansi Youth Chess Tournament sanctioned by CHESSA.”
