GEMSBOK-KATHU: Gerchand Cloete, a determined and resilient son of Upington, has overcome incredible obstacles to achieve his academic goals and embark on a new career as a high school teacher.
First and foremost, Gerchand gives honor to Jesus Christ, acknowledging that his faith has been the driving force behind his success. "I want to give all the glory to Jesus Christ, who has been my rock and inspiration throughout my journey," he said.
Gerchand's journey has not been easy. Raised by his adoptive parents, who worked tirelessly to provide for him despite their limited financial resources, Gerchand has known hardship and struggle from a young age. There were times when he had to go to school with little to no food, and he often felt like he didn't have the support he needed.

Despite these challenges, Gerchand persevered. He recalls a particularly difficult moment when a teacher told him that he should leave school and go work at the mall instead. But Gerchand refused to give up. He told himself that he would prove that teacher wrong, and he worked even harder to achieve his goals.
Gerchand's hard work paid off when he gra-duated with a Business Management Diploma in 2024. He then went on to pass his Lecturer Degree in December 2024. The formal graduation ceremony for his Lecturer Degree will take place in May 2025, marking his second gra-duation ceremony.
Gerchand would like to extend his heartfelt gratitude to those who have supported him along the way. First and foremost, he thanks Jesus Christ for His guidance and strength. He also thanks his adoptive parents, Sussie (Katriena Cloete) and Boeta (Lucas Cloete), who have been his pillars of strength throughout his journey.
He also thanks Elsa Jones, editor of the Gemsbok Newspaper, for her ongoing support and recognition of his achievements.
Gerchand would also like to express his sincere gratitude to the staff of High School Kathu, who have given him a warm welcome and a chance to prove himself. "I am grateful for the trust they have placed in me and my abilities," he said.
Gerchand's story is one of triumph over adversity. He faced bullying and skepticism from others, but he never let that hold him back. Instead, he used those challenges as motivation to push himself even harder.
Today, Gerchand is proud to be a high school teacher at High School Kathu, where he is inspi-ring and educating students in grades 8-12.
When asked about his journey, Gerchand had this to say: "Everything is possible if you put your mind to it. Your circumstances can't control you; it's you that can control your circumstances. Don't put your blame on your circumstances. Instead, use them as motivation to push yourself to greatness"
The Gemsbok Newspaper congratulates Gerchand Cloete on his outstanding achievement and wishes him all the best in his future endeavors.
