Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - The municipality started demolishing empty buildings in the city last week. At the time of going to press, they were busy demolishing a dilapidated building in Alabama.
The Department of Planning and Human Settlements initiated this project of demolishing abandoned and dilapidated buildings in Matlosana.
Ntswaki Makgetha, municipal spokesperson, said Cllr Portia Mtshawulana is the driving force behind the initiative.
Residents in Elandia are happy about the demolition of a dilapidated building located at 22 Couzyn Street in Elandia. It is not known if the house was standing empty or whether residents moved into it illegally.
“This action follows numerous complaints from residents regarding the neglected buildings, which have become havens for illegal activities, including drug use, posing significant risks to people’s safety. Through the demolition of these buildings, the department aims to eradicate these hazards and prevent further harm,” the Cllr said.
Zama-Zama caught with gold in dreadlocks

Last week Col Adele Myburgh, police spokesperson, confirmed that the Zama-Zamas were arrested at the same shift. Mine security apprehended the first group of trespassers on Thursday September 19. One of them had unwrought gold hidden inside his dreadlocks.
Offender’s family day an emotional affair
Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - Klerksdorp Correctional Centre was filled with emotions and joy during the Offender’s Family Day on Heritage Day.
The event was aimed at strengthening family bonds and supporting the rehabilitation of offenders. Excited family members were welcomed by the unit manager, Boatile van Wyk who highlighted the importance of maintaining strong family ties in the journey toward rehabilitation, reminding everyone that family is a key pillar in supporting the positive reintegration of offenders back into society. “Today is about showing love, rebuilding trust, and creating new memories,” he said.
SASSA payment dates for October
Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - SASSA released the payment schedule for social grants for 2023/24 years. Here is when you can collect your grants for October.
The first week of the month is reserved for elderly, child, and disability grant payments.
After that, it is Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant recipients, and all other grants are paid out. All other beneficiaries can still collect at South African Post Office branches except for the SRD recipients.
