Lentswe, Stilfontein - An indication of how financially beleaguered/ incapacitated the NW health department is, is that, between April 2024 and March this year, it settled eleven medico legal cases against it, for R80,35 million. These are among 414 medical malpractice and negligence/wrongful death claims the province is currently assessing.
Medical school honours “son of Klerksdorp”
Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The NWU’s soon-to-be-established medical school will be called the NWU Desmond Tutu School of Medicine. This decision was taken in consultation with - and received the approval of - the Archbishop Desmond Tutu IP Trust.
Eleven municipalities to benefit
Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The release of the March 2025 tranche of equitable shares amounting to over R689 662 million cleared for transfer to eleven municipalities across the province was welcomed by the African National Congress (ANC) Chief Whip in the North West Provincial Legislature (NWPL), Motlalepula Rosho, MPL.
Fugitive back in court
Lentswe, Klerksdorp - A Klerksdorp fugitive who has been on the run from the law since 2019, was hunted down in Mpumalanga. Ironically Tebogo Mahlangu was attending court in Witbank on Friday April 11 on another case of robbery with aggravating circumstances when he was arrested for escaping from Klerksdorp.
At the time of his escape, Mahlangu was awaiting trial and incarcerated when he managed to get hold of a police officer’s firearm during a transfer from court. He and four accomplices involved in the 2015 robbery of diamond gravel near Wolmaransstad, escaped.
Cattle thief to spend 10 years behind bars
Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Thinus Becker Theunissen (64) was sentenced to 10 years direct imprisonment on nine counts of theft when he appeared in the Klerksdorp Specialised Commercial Crimes Court this week.
