R16 Million in gold seized in crackdown

Klerksdorp Record, Stilfontein - The fight against illegal mining in the North West province is making progress with the Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) securing a preservation order for approximately 39 058 metric tons of gold-bearing material (GBM) valued at an estimated R16 million.

The order was granted by the North West High Court on June 13, in terms of Section 38 of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act 121 of 1998 (POCA).

The seized material is alleged to be the proceeds of unlawful activities. This action follows extensive investigations into illegal mining operations that reportedly took place between 2016 and 2020.

Hawks bust Kanana man with explosives

Klerksdorp Record, Kanana - The Hawks in collaboration with Crime Intelligence and the Tactical Response Team (TRT) busted a 32-year-old man for dealing in explosives.

The suspect was arrested in Kanana on Thursday June 12 following a sting operation. According to Lt-Col Tinyiko Mathebula, police spokesperson, the police were tipped off about a man being in possession of explosives stolen from a mine that he was busy selling.

“The team worked together and nabbed the suspect soon after selling the explosives for R10 000.’’

He was expected to appear in the Orkney Magistrates’ Court this week.

Die DA se Freddy Sonakile het in reaksie hierop gesê dat eise soos dié ‘n direkte gevolg is van die departement se versuim om die provinsie se padinfrastruktuur in stand te hou.

Her number is 7 493 and she has now claimed her double green number. It is Comrades lingo meaning that she will always keep that number.
