Klerksdorp Record, Orkney - It was a busy long weekend for the police in the province. 

The Anti-Gang Unit arrested three Lesotho foreign nationals in Kanana on Friday morning April 25, after being found in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. 

The first suspect, Rethabile Johannes Ntoyi, was arrested for illegal possession of a Norinco firearm with eight rounds of ammunition. The other two suspects, Seronthe Nthipu, and Thabo Mphinyame, were found in possession of an unlicensed revolver, four rounds of ammunition and spent 9mm cartridge.

Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - Thinus Becker Theunissen (64) was sentenced to 10 years direct imprisonment on nine counts of theft when he appeared in the Klerksdorp Specialised Commercial Crimes Court this week.

“Reports indicate that between November 2018 and September 2019, the accused who was a well-known employee at a butchery, took the cattle from various farmers at Klerksdorp, Potchefstroom, Hartbeesfontein and Ventersdorp to the auction house to sell them on behalf of the farmers and kept the money for himself,” said W/O Amogelang Malwetse, spokesperson.

Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - For the first time ever, liquor stores in North West were open over the long weekend. The new North West Liquor Licencing Amendment Act came into operation on April 1.

It replaced the Liquor Act 27 of 1989 that ceased to operate on March 31.

The new act allows liquor stores to open their doors from 09:00 to 17:00 on Sundays and public holidays and from 08:00 to 20:00 on other days. Supermarkets that sell wine are allowed to sell liquor from 08:00 to 17:00 from Monday to Saturday, and from 09:00 to 17:00 on Sundays and public holidays.
