Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - The smiles on the faces of all Klerksdorp Marathon committee members were visible for kilometres on Sunday afternoon.
They successfully hosted another edition of the Aurum Klerksdorp Marathon on Sunday February 11. Someone said church pews were empty for the morning service in Klerksdorp as approximately 1 500 athletes took part in the four races. The most entries were in the 42km marathon route. A bus full of runners from Gaborone and runners as far as Kimberley, Mahikeng and Bloemfontein participated.
Highlights of the day include Comrades Marathon runner-up Adele Broodryk competing in the 10km and winning in 38 minutes. Adele is a lecturer at NWU and full-time mom while performing at highest levels of running in SA.
Louis Massyn who is a celebrity in the running community with 47 consecutive Comrades marathon finishes, took part in the marathon and completed it in 4 hours 44 minutes. The first runner home for Klerksdorp Marathon Club was Tikologo Makhoana in an impressive 3:35. Ratanang Shabangu was the first lady of Klerksdorp and in the overall 10th place.
Another highlight was that of a wheelchair athlete from Mafikeng who completed the 21km in 2 hours 11minutes. Vostile Ruba is the chairman of GBT Mongoose Wheelchair Basketball at Gelukspan and competes for his own fitness, awareness about wheelchair athletes and fundraising for the club. His first official race was the Soweto marathon last year and since then it seems the bug has bitten and he is planning a lot more races. He said the potholes was a challenge for him at certain points but overall he enjoyed the route and all the support he got along the way.
The event had 11 water points along the way and they served ice cold drinks and water to the athletes. Runners went through 17 000 water sachets, 1 200 litres Coke (90 cases), 550 bags of ice, 11 000 cups and 1 000 water bottles.
Klerksdorp Rugby back on the field
Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - The local rugby club is back in action this Saturday February 10 as their teams take the
field to play in the first friendly games of the season.
Bring your friends and family to enjoy a good day of rugby at Markotter Stadium as they prepare for the upcoming PVR league in March. Klerksdorp 2 will play against Viljoenskroon Rugby Club at 14:00, followed by Klerksdorp 1 against Ventersdorp Rugby Club at 16:00.
Rugby dreams coming true
Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - Matlosana’s Executive Mayor, Cllr James Tsolela, congratulated 19-year-old Kgotatso Sibi from Jouberton who was invited by the Bloemfontein Rugby Academy to take part in their program in order to nurture his rugby skills and talent.
Sibi left for Bloemfontein on January 30. The young sportsman comes from a small family of six. He discovered his interest in rugby while attending Keurhof in 2016.
His older brother took him to a rugby match, and the team decided to use him, which sparked his love for the sport. He also played for school teams like THS, Wesvalia and Schoonspruit.
Mayor Tsolela gave Sibi a fitting send-off last week encouraging him to become the next Siya Kolisi.
NWU behind esports
Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - The esports titles to be played in all MSSA’s school championships and leagues have been announced.
The titles are CS GO, Valorant, FIFA ‘24, eFootball, Rocket League, DotA, Clash Royale, League of Legends, Clash of Clans, Mobile Legends Bang Bang and Street Fighter V.
The growth of esports starts at school level and is the breeding ground for champions. Many Protea esports teams that participate in international esports events are learners.
Bene brand, speke sing op Ottosdal
Die jaarlikse Draf en Trap was ‘n reuse sukses met 66 meer hardlopers as verlede jaar. Sowat 1 600 hardlopers het aan die byeenkoms deegeneem. Ottosdal het uit sy nate gebars op Saterdag 27 Januarie met die jaarlikse Draf en Trap. Volgens Willa Naude, organiseerder, het 882 fietsryers vanjaar deelgeneem. Dis die grootste byeenkoms op dié dorp en inwoners en die duisende besoekers beplan hul groot dag lank voor uit. Pule Hlabahlaba het die marathon gewen. Omkring julle dagboeke vir 25 Januarie 2025!
