Klerksdorp Record, Stilfontein - A Stilfontein man pleaded guilty on charges of bestiality in terms of the Animal Protection Act last week.
Philip von Furstenberg Boardman was arrested in November last year. He has been detained since and will be in court again on Thursday May 2 for sentencing.
Animal lovers reacted in shock to the news of the arrest of the middle aged man who filmed himself raping his dogs. The camera footage was reported to the animal shelter who immediately took steps to remove the animals from the property. Boardman fled his home when the police pitched and was later lured to the animal shelter to “strike a deal’’.
He was arrested at the shelter where the police waited for him.
The dogs, four small cross breed dogs, were placed in the care of the shelter. Three of them have been adopted into loving families while one of the dogs did not recover from the ordeal and died. The shelter’s Suzette Kotze is set to give evidence in the pre-sentencing trial. She told Klerksdorp Record that this was the worst case of animal abuse she encountered in her career.
No cholera cases in NW - Dept of Health
Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - One person has died as a result of cholera and there are 12 laboratory-confirmed cases since January in South Africa.
The National Department of Health released these figures this week and issued a warning for the Vaal River, the main source of water for Gauteng and North West.
“The country has recorded more than 150 suspected cholera cases between January 1 and April 18,” said Foster Mohale, spokesperson National Department of Health. “Eleven of these cases were recorded in Limpopo and one in Gauteng. Three of these cases are imported from Zimbabwe, with no definite history of contact with other confirmed cases. The person who died was a 48-year-old South African citizen from Musina, in Vhembe District. He experienced diarrhoeal symptoms and was admitted in hospital on March 16. He passed away on March 21 in a Pietersburg hospital.”
There are no deaths or confirmed cases in the NW.
Mohale said the risk of both imported cases and local transmission remains high due to the cross-border movements to and from both Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
He appealed to the organisers of social gatherings including religious and traditional events to ensure strict compliance with personal hygiene, including hand washing, especially during food preparation and serving, and ablution facilities to prevent possible transmission of cholera and other food borne and water-borne diseases.
In May last year 17 people died from cholera in the country.

Last week, Cllr James Tsolela refused to fell on the proverbial sword, despite the ANC provincial executive committee (PEC) recalling him and staff in his office confirming his resignation on Friday April 12.
A letter by the PEC circulated in Klerksdorp, where Mayor Tsolela is dismissed and instructions given to suspend CFO Mercy Phetla whose name once again was mentioned in a corruption scandal.
